Are Jehovah's Witnesses a cult? (No Exit)
by sacolton inthere is simply no proper or honorable way to leave the cult.
period.
to leave is to fail, to die, to be defeated by evil.

Again I said for some it does and in fact for most it probably does. But this isn't forcing damage.

Nope Sacolton I am not convinced, perhaps it is a generational thing but I do not see them as a conventional cult. By your definition every religion is a cult (which probably is true) but if your talking about a "true" cult that society labels as such I don't believe it is. Scientology? Yes. Dubs, no. You can still disagree with some things in dubland even some major things, they just don't want you broadcasting it out to everyone you know. How is this different from Catholicism, Hindu's or Baptists?

Sorry. the only element I find of the dubs that is overly cultish is dissfellowshipping, but I am still not buying the dubs are a cult. Quite honestly you lost me when you drew a red herring with Scientology. Scientologists actually take time to destroy people's lives when they leave. Dubs just ignore the person(s), while this might cause emotional damage to most it is far from forcing physical and emotional damage on them. The media and our country do almost 90% of those things you mentioned too.

I don't really wish to "Attack" Religion - but this is hard to ignore!
by AK - Jeff innot my words.
not my total sentiments.
but it made me think, and that is the only reason i posted it.

I think the difference is Christianity tells you that helping people like this is more important then meeting at places and boasting about how bad or good you are. At a bar/ballgame/work your not being guilt tripped in to giving away your money....errr I mean raising your faith.

Busted Dreams--11/1/1989 Style (Big puke alert)
by WTWizard inso here is the dreaded 11/1/1989 puketower article.
this is the one that said "you are not going to do fornication, and you are not going to marry outside the cult".
effectively, this has killed many a dream marriage, and stopped people from having any fun.. oddly enough, the opening paragraph tells us that jehovah is not out to bust up our fun.

Didn't England start exploring it's sexual side in the 1800's? I mean then you could go to a brothel and pick up a 15 year old boy and you were only looked at as weird if "buggery" was involved.

Paul's belief in Christ - Lets get it STRAIGHT this time!
by lovelylil ini need to vent.
i am sick and tired of people claiming that paul did not believe in the jesus christ of the bible.
there are many articles on the web (someone sent me one today) that claims that paul's writings deny that a historical jesus existed.

lovelylil, please don't take this the wrong way, but when I see post like this it always makes me chuckle a little bit. It reminds me of when someone posts a scholarly theory and someone comes back with a religious theory as if this is going to put the scholarly theory to rest. Well it never does. As Nark pointed out the debate isn't about Paul denying or not believing in the Christ of the gospels. It's just a scholarly debate that if you really truly believe in the bible shouldn't make one hill of beans.

Has my mom given up?
by Princess Daisy Boo inso with the memorial a mere 3 days away i was not heard a word from her about it?
each year i am told at what time it will be at the local congregation and some years she has even got one of the local witnesses to contact me to invite me (they even offered to fetch me once!)..
i am assuming that she has decided not to bring up the subject after the talk we had a few weeks ago, but this must be eating away at her big time!.

My parents have yet to bring up the issue either.
